whole point of the rule of law: Legislative Executive and Judiciary.
Any country who has a functioning democracy is based on the rule of the law.

But some people mix these things at 4 AM in their heads and come out with a rule of law thing that they think only they possess.

<If people would honor their marriage vows and their civil commitments to each other, I would not have a job.> Before I was married, I said to my girlfriend [now wife] that I didn't want to be married as it would just taint us with government muck and my standards are higher than government muck and laws anyway. She thought it better that we be married and she mentioned an aunt who would like us to be married, and I didn't really mind because having higher standards means any muck the government makes would not be an issue anyway.

Now, I'm glad we did and have over the years have appreciated her sensible approach to life. It would have been a pain in the neck to navigate the world and jobs, bank accounts and all sorts of things if not married. The government of New Zealand has introduced an auto-marriage system so that even if you don't wish to be married, you are, after a couple of years of "looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, swims and flies like a duck = okay, it is a marriage and you are ipso facto married though you did not actually agree to anything or sign anything".

Like most government things, auto-marriage has caused various problems. Lawyers love such a mess of course. Having an actual ceremony and actual signing and dating of an agreement is far more sensible than a gradual process of stumbling and blundering into a situation. Then there are relationship issues. It becomes important to break up before the 2 year period [or maybe it's 3 years] is up. But knowing the starting point is tricky too. Was it the first kiss, or when they lived together for a short time a couple of years ago but they parted company more or less, before actually turning into ducks a couple of months ago.

People have lost sight of the real reason for marriage. It was because young people get randy and will have sex. That means the female will have babies. That means the community has got a problem. That means the young man has got to be identified and made to take responsibility for the woman and baby who of course, cannot survive on their own. So a marriage is nothing to do with love and all that blather. It's about protecting women and children from the consequences of sex. The marriage deal could leave out all the "to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse" and cut to the chase. "Look son, if you stick that in there, you are going to be liable for her and any children that come out of there, so make sure you have got this one right because it's a life-long commitment you are making. We don't want flitting from lady to lady passing on sexually transmitted diseases and babies all over the place and a big mess. See this shotgun? That's our enforcer so make sure you get this right. Have you considered going gay? No children and much more straight forward [so to speak - little joke there]. " Young man sweats and considers his unfortunate situation, lust, and hopes for the future. Gorgeous young woman completely blanks his brain. He signs on the dotted line, full of intoxicants and in a questionable state to sign such an important document. Plenty of witnesses gather to ensure he is aware of what he has done in case he forgets. Shotguns help too.

Unfortunately, it has all turned to custard in some countries with children, women, broken hearts and angry men are splattered all over the place with the welfare state picking up the tab until the money runs out.

Now we have the absurdity of homosexual marriage.

PS: Being married gives a LOT of street cred. Going through borders was a doddle with family loaded up. Customs officers took one look, realized I did not need any more trouble and that the wife would be giving all the grief that's needed, and waved us through. They didn't want a swarm of children climbing around the place either. But on my own, they'd stop me and take a close look. Dodgy male guilty of crossing a border while male. Black people shouldn't whine about "driving while black". They should try being male if they think it's bad being black. Of course some of them get both black and male which is unfortunate for them. But these things are sent to try us. Literally sometimes. "The judge and jury hereby finds that you are male. Guilty as charged." Look at the ratio of men and women in gaol as proof of bias!! [Just kidding - if it's good enough for women to whine about numbers of women in jobs and their pay rates, and the melanin-rich to whine about how many of them there are in gaol, it's good enough for me].
