Why should QNTM sell off the DD business when it can spin it off to its long-suffering (yeah right, up >100% since the beginning of the year) shareholders. By volume, it's the second largest out there. And unlike the marginal profit (actually, more like wealth destroyiug) crowd, it is solidly profitable. Bigfoot is great. It has locked up the low-end sub-$1000 OEM consumer market because it uses mature materials and offers relatively huge capacity. Performance is not a consideration at these price points.

If hard drive makers are to avoid commoditization, they ought to stop selling commodities. That means to sell into niche markets with niche products.

QNTM will not exit the DD biz. They will increase their role, with expansion into lightweightportable and maybe even home storage archival systems. They will expand the use of tape and backup to include a much broader usage. Storage will become a diversified biz for them, thro key elements (perhaps DLT) will be the most major contributors, That does not mean they exit other base businesses.
