I have been playing around with the desktop, and laptop (both win 7)and do not have the two columns; Date modified & Type. I have one column that shows date modified and size. Opening a folder does not provide a drop menu. Instead I have to open a folder to see the contents.

There has to be a setting control setting somewhere that can be changes.

To apply the current view setting to other folders

I believe that they are called tooltips and you have to modify the registry to disable them:

windowsreference.com
