Guess I'm too dumb to know what the hell that is all about. But I can connect dots and we are better off with this president than with the last one, or with any of the clowns currently jockeying to unseat Obama. And so is the rest of the world. A fairly simple observation that seems somehow lost here. Maybe the entire world, like most Republicans, can't tolerate a Negro US president?

Elmat, this wikipedia article provides a rough summary of Closing of the American Mind, but seems to move his target from mainstream philosophy to some peripheral ideas....when he is really saying that mainstream philosophy has collapsed into relativism. An example of this would be Martin Heidegger. Many consider him to be perhaps the foremost academic philosopher of the 20th century....He was an existentialist German philosopher who taught some fairly incomprehensible ideas, culminating with the point that truth is culturally determined, or culturally expressed, and the way one establishes which culture is better for the particular times is that which becomes dominant...and he was in fact the primary academic supporter of Nazi Germany, and considered the Nazi movement to be a key embodiment of his ideas. One does not have to look to the fringe of philosophy for relativism and support of demagogues....this feature lies right at the heart of modern philosophy. rp
