It was so bad in the 1930s that the Great Depression was a catastrophe which pretty well led directly to World War II.

Not in the US but in Germany. You could look it up. If you like history and you don't know this history this may be about as interesting as it gets.

Start with Hjalmar Schacht and move on to the price of gold. George Maynard Keynes is a particularly insightful observer.
