One time we were too clever to our good. We paid dearly. We tried to keep going when the most clever action would be to face a depression as the rest of the world did.

It was in late 70's. We chose to avoid depression. The debts that piled up broke the country's back.

Then we tried the too clever thing. We indexed everything to inflation. Result was hyper-inflation.
We lost a decade and went back to where we were in the 50's.
