How do Cube's (Divicom's) encoders stack up to Lucent encoders. A recent deal by GTE in Ventura county features Lucent encoders.
"Digital service is made available through
new equipment at the "head end," the network's programming
source, and digital set-top boxes in each customer's home or
office. The network bandwidth is 750 megahertz; the analog
spectrum is 50-550 MHz and the digital spectrum is 550-750
MHz. The head end equipment and set-top boxes (DCT-1000) are
manufactured by NextLevel Systems. The StarSight on-screen
program guide is a product of StarSight Telecast Inc. MPEG-2
encoders are manufactured by Lucent Technologies, which is also
the system integrator and contractor. "

From the same Issue, I found some value in Elias Moosa's
piece, Market Cycles, Timing is Everything.....

......New Technology Cycles

Unlike capacity cycles, new technology cycles happen frequently and are
easier to identify. They can kick up the octane levels on the rising
edge of any of the other cycles, but they can also be unforgiving to
those left with yesterday's technology.

Given their explosive nature, new technology cycles can be particularly
fruitful for well-informed investors. The penetration of new
technologies within a large and growing installed base follows
relatively clean "S-curve" patterns. Technology upgrade cycles are
easier to anticipate and profit from than capacity cycles, which can
become a game of chicken for investors.

The massive PC industry, with hundreds of millions of machines
worldwide, is a fertile platform for deploying new technology. Wireless
phone markets and networking hardware markets also contribute to a
growing pool of installed technology bases. During the past few years,
we've seen several instances of technology upgrade cycles in the PC
industry.
