Von Hayek's term for this kind of behavior was "expertism". Someone else has the solution because presumably they have the "smarts" to figure it out. They have the smarts to create a disaster is more like it. Same problem here and I think nearly every where else. The federal government here under the Liberals clearly believed in top down expertise. Under the Conservatives less so. There was a hopeful sign here a couple of weeks ago when the feds decided to get out of the health care racket. For decades the Canadian government had been managing health care at a distance by sending the provincial govts (whose responsibility it is) lots of money for healthcare with, of course, strings attached. The Conservatives said the heck with that, here's the money see what you can do. Now this isn't a beautiful thing because healthcare here is in its own way just as screwed as in the US, but at least one level of "experts" have been excised from the problem. Also, the vehicle of the experts' control, the Canada Health Act, has been terribly weakened. Canadian provinces now have much greater freedom to enact necessary reforms. This might seem like a small thing but the experts now are all local where, metaphorically, we can get our hands on their throats, and I think that's a big deal. Other small hopeful signs: feds have done away with Canadian Wheat Marketing Board; are getting rid of Long Gun Registry. The socialist types are in a lather about these actions. This cannot be a bad thing.
