Unfortunately that was probably written before Java became an International Standard which is going to prevent the so-called splintering. Who is going to use non-compatible tools when 100% pure, standard software development tools are available without any shortcomings over the non-standard product? There are few developers who would choose the proprietary path given the choice. Now, you may be saying that Java is not an approved standard yet, that was also the case with C and C++. This is a process, not a rubber stamp. The lawsuit between Sun and Microsoft is based on Sun's stipulation that Microsoft support Sun's implementation completely, otherwise it's not Java.
