That was indeed a small part of my point - hedonic measuring is dicey at best. But the real point is that the BLS does do hedonics but not reverse hedonics, yet another fact that causes CPI to be lower than reality. Directly comparing a particle board dining table today with a real wood one a decade or three ago, hand made or not, hides quality and other drops quite well.

It's not 'all bad' either as you note - a particle board table beats nothing. But not when one should be doing direct apples to apples comparisons.
