My bear was about 3 miles behind the Red Wind casino in Olympia, WA - I normally see piles of salmon in the woods where the Nisqually Indians have been baiting them - not very sporting of them 'nature loving' peoples. These are the same woods the Fort Lewis soldiers train in - so removing this bear could in fact be a service to them since they sleep out there during training.

Deer hunting tag limits are set well within the bounds of the yearly die off due to limited winter food, age and predation. The taking of mature animals provides those limited food resources to the young deer to make it through the winter. All this hunting and management effort provides revenue to the State, jobs for biologists, sporting good stores and employees etc - it's a very big business with millions of dollars injected into the economy every year. This direct interaction with what it takes to feed yourself is a grounding activity that reminds you of what your life costs in terms of animals killed for your daily meals. It's a humbling experience to harvest your own meat and makes dinner prayers over meals all the more meaningful.
