Yes he plans to run track in college. The problem is that he has only one season of track under his belt, and indoor at that, whereas the serious track kids have between 7-10 seasons (depending on if they ran cross country). Track recruits off the outdoor times (100, 400, 800 etc), not the indoor times (55, 300, 600, etc.). Unlike baseball, for example, where you get recruited off going to showcases, your time in track puts you on an even footing with everyone else in the country. Either you make the recruiting cut or you don't. He technically has no recruiting times.

Nevertheless, several coaches have expressed interest. As an example, the Harvard coach invited him to a special get acquainted gathering over the summer. After the talk, the head coach told the 100+ kids there to split up and see the applicable assistant coach for their event (sprints, middle distance, field, etc.). He was the only boy in the sprint group. Let's just say most sprinters skew toward a certain ethnic group that wasn't well represented that day. Had he ever run a sub-50 400, he potentially could have been in. As it is, he'd likely be in the general pool with all the kids with 4.0/4.0 averages and perfect SATs, meaning likely really long odds at best, save only that my father is an alum (legacy does help a bit).

So, no scholarships. Just me dressed in my organ grinder suit with a money on my back holding out a cup for strangers to toss coins into.
