Yes, I remember seeing those post mortem photos, but I doubt that this was a Catholic thing. I think people just did it.

What the Santorums did - assuming that the popular descriptions are true - cannot be called "old-fashioned". That would imply tradition - and there was no such tradition, to my knowledge. I'll ask a priest next time I see one, but I'm pretty sure what the answer will be. The story strikes me more like some sort of a New Age fantasy, rather than following Catholic teachings.
