Both my father and brother were Navy pilots......

I asked my brother what it was like landing on a carrier..... It sounded a bit like controlled panic. He spoke of the different points you need to scan, airspeed, attitude, rate of decent, the meatball on the deck..... I'm sure I've forgotten some but basically the pilot starts scanning about 5 miles out where he sets his attitude and speed and then any corrections in elevation are done by power...... The closer you come to the carrier the faster you do your scans and all the while you've got an LSO telling you any corrections you need to do....... He said you hardly see the fightdeck until after you land.....

When I was going on cruise to the Gulf on the USS Lincoln, we were circling about 50 miles off the Ca. coast in rough seas in order to pick up a squadron of F-18s from NAS Lemoore when I witnessed the scariest landing I've ever seen. The squadron CO decided to test landing conditions himself. Now I'm not sure if the CO was using the computer to sync the flight deck or not but he caught the deck just as it was starting up and slammed deck so hard that at one point the rear wheel was entirely off the ground. To say the least, he diverted the rest of the squadron to North Island...<g> To say the most, we had to do a FOD walkdown afterwards to retrieve bits of the plane that had fallen off.... With the pucker factor that the pilot was under, I was glad I didn't have to clean out the cockpit....<g>
