Last night we went to a community forum where the County Assessor was to explain why everybody's assessment went up four grand.

A lot of the reason was tied up in new software they got which required septic, water, and utilities to be assessed as part of the structure rather than the land. Which makes no sense, and the guy knew it. He frankly admitted they made some mistakes and would rectify them, but he did a very poor job of explaining the situation. A handout was very helpful and clear, but his oral presentation assumed everybody knew everything he did.

Our county is a budget based county, which means no matter what the assessment is the total of taxes collected will be the same. I was concerned about that, because I thought they were just trying to get more money. The new assessment was so shoddy they will probably have to redo it. One woman said she thought they should have tabled it until they got the bugs worked out of their software, and I agree.

Right at the end there was nearly a fist fight between one of the people who stood up to speak and one of the monitors who handed out the microphone to people who wished to speak. We were on our way out by then, and I think they got it settled.
