Tlhis may be true enough, but it wasn't the point I was making to Z--which is that interest groups threaten Presidents all the time with politcal revenge--and that's an acceptable part of our system.

I find that just hilarious. The GOP have always been paper tigers when it comes to fiscal conservatism. They are profligates, not conservatives. I've posted plenty of data to that effect. It should come as any surprise to anyone. The GOP spend like drunken sailors. Always have and always will whether it's through tax cuts we can't afford or through spending programs on military or their favorite oil subsidies. They pile on the deficits and debt. That's the real GOP for you. They talk a good game, but they are irresponsible. Of course, the Democrats are no better.
