Redefinition of what a rich country is. If Germany has not much hard assets to be used as a reserve of value for people to throw their money at can it e considered a rich country?

You may say yes: they can use their Euros to get other people's gold and pile it up. But for how long people would be giving gold in exchange for gold?

Now if you have a country that produces stuff out of its material resources (farmland, large territory, right demographic mix) it would be another story.

It will reach a point of Europeans keeping a sack of potato instead of money.
