Sounds like your EOT/BOT sensor. Look to see if you have dust on the led or the receptor. These will be in the area of the drive where the prism on the tape cartridge is when the tape is inserted.

Given the pricing of the SparQ, it does look attractive for backup purposes of 1-2GB at a time. I'm thinking of ditching my old tape drive for it possibly.

BTW, if this was announced or not, Syjet carts are selling for $80 at various vendors (CompUSA, Best Buy, some mailorder), well maybe for a limited time perhaps.

Get a CD recorder for backup. EIDE mechanisms around $300. Media below $2 each. A lot cheaper than the Sparq cartridges and more likely to be around 6 months from now....
