I had my PM turned off a few years ago when that was an easy click. I did it because I did not want to be a part of behind the scenes strategizing against a another poster. It's a bad practice for me because I consider each topic/issue independently and find myself opposing the views of people on one issue while agreeing with them on others. Thread members are not appropriate topics of discussion. It may be appropriate occasionally to call someone out on bad behavior but most of the time I try to ignore character conversations. I've never seen anything good come of it on SI. I do my best to think for my self; partisan groupisms are oppressive in that regard. Those politically related PMs can come back to haunt you unless you are part of a group think body of posters (but I'd rather not participate at all than do that).

Also during the first year or two of posting on SI, I found my self participating in ganging up, which made me feel icky. So turning off PM helped me to discipline that urge. I don't want to be involved in making other posters the topic. That's hard to resist with all the gossip, innuendo, sniping, back biting, spinning, lying, general mendaciousness and such which takes place on these political threads. If you were encouraging people to gang up on Laz Long, I don't have much sympathy for you. I would have outed you too.

My PM isn't used much anymore except for wishing well to others who I admire for one reason or another, or for getting clarification if I think I am misunderstanding something.

If that's true you have nothing to complain about. But since you're complaining, you must have been ashamed of the PM.

Don, > A PM on SI is just that...Private...

Why don't you send me your SSN via PM then?

You're really STUPID if you think any info sent over PM will necessarily be kept "private."
