Monarchs weren't necessarily dictators. The Habsburgs stepped down rather than fire on their own people, in contrast to the secular dictators that followed. This guy is a pretty good monarchist blogger.

I just can't get excited about someone who gloriously defended her dictator.

If the option is between a French dictator (Charles VII) or an English one (Henry V), I guess you side with your tribe. That's the way it's been for at least 15,000 years.
