"Clearly their high-end smartphones would be their appropriate competitors to the iPhone. Estimates for sales of those phones (that I have seen), range from a bit over 30 million to around 35 million."

Ah, well, in that case, I don't consider the bulk of Samsung's smartphone sales to be direct competitors to the iPhone either. It's like saying bottled water didn't have quite the worldwide market share as tap water last year. Sales of Samsung's throwaway smartphones into 3rd world countries = irrelevant. It has no bearing on Apple's business whether Samsung's $150 midrange phone has Android, Bada, Symbian, or no smartphone OS whatsoever. Apple is not playing in that market.

I estimate Samsung's galaxy S, galaxy S 2, and Galaxy Nexus sales at 15 million for the quarter. The rest are essentially feature phone replacements.
