Kennedy pumped up the conventional army and had the troops to go into Vietnam. Ike wouldn't have had the men to do it.

JFK sent US Special Forces to Vietnam. With support the total in 63 was 16,000.
After JFK's death, LBJ sent more troops. There were 536,000 US troops in Vietnam in early 68 when LBJ quit.

I have always believed JFK is the only Pres we had in my life who truly understood (including all the nuances) insurgency and counter-insurgency warfare.
