The best estimates I have seen are 30-32 million, but psylent says about half of those are really kind phony smartphones - not iPhone competitors

Ah, well, in that case, I don't consider the bulk of Samsung's smartphone sales to be direct competitors to the iPhone either. It's like saying bottled water didn't have quite the worldwide market share as tap water last year. Sales of Samsung's throwaway smartphones into 3rd world countries = irrelevant. It has no bearing on Apple's business whether Samsung's $150 midrange phone has Android, Bada, Symbian, or no smartphone OS whatsoever. Apple is not playing in that market.
