Seems to me that he is positioning himself to be the running mate on the Republican ticket. The debt has gone to where it is today is because of the Iraq and Afghanistan war. We were already in deficit territory when Bush ordered the troops into these two countries. Many did not support his Iraq push but he pushed ahead even if it added to the debt. Simultaneously, the economy buckled under the war expense similar to how the Communists buckled under the pressure of a military arms buildup.
