Of course supreme court Justices would never admit to this "existentialism" and would fall back on the 'judicial philosophy" argument, but there is much to what you say. Law is an artificial system, but so far it is the best one that our democracy has come up with to deal with disputes.

PS. The lawyer in me needs to point out that, as far as I know, Clinton wasn't found "guilty" in his impeachment--unless you were talking about the verdict of the court of public opinion.
