That's a good idea in a perfect world, but it's not compatible with many things at universities.

I agree with that. Unfortunately, industrial art programs at high schools have weak support. In the town where I once lived the HS had a great construction program and the kids built and sold a house every year.

It was a great program, but guess what got cut first.

Full disclosure: I have a BS degree and I'm proud of it, and also post graduate study. I still think industrial arts are given short shrift.
