CES 2012: Lenovo Announces K91, The World’s First Ice Cream Sandwich-Powered TV
Posted by Jaroslav Stekl in Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, Lenovo, News
androidpolice.com

Lenovo wasn’t on the list of Google TV partners, but for good reason: the company has just announced that, in addition to its new tablet and smartphone, it will soon be launching a “Smart TV” powered by none other than Ice Cream Sandwich.

Indeed, the company hasn’t abandoned all hope of an Android-based TV OS; in fact, the situation is in reality quite the opposite – with the K91, it’ll be embracing everyone’s favorite robot completely. Its (presumably heavily) modified version of the OS will feature:

Video on Demand that tailors itself to your viewing history“Internet applications” (it’s not quite clear whether this indicates something outside of ICS’ regular contents, or just Google’s traditional web browser)“Traditional TV programs” (again, it’s not quite clear what’s meant by this)Access to the Android Market (of course)Access to the Lenovo StoreVoice controlCloud support (yep, that’d be the “personal cloud”)

Additionally, the K91 will ship with a 5MP (!) webcam for video chat and a full HD IPS display at 240hz with SRS TruSurround. As of yet, there’s no word on how large/small that display is, so you’ll just have to keep your fingers crossed on that count.

As with the IdeaTab S2 and the S2 phone, the K91 should be available right now on the Chinese market, but unfortunately we Yanks will have to wait for an indefinite period of time. In the meantime, check out the PR below for more info:

CES 2012, Las Vegas – January 8, 2012: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY), the world’s number two PC company, is flexing its innovation muscle at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show and beyond, to create a seamless digital experience for its customers across multiple devices, be it PCs, tablets, smartphones or Smart TVs. Lenovo recently unveiled its “Personal Cloud” vision, marking the transformation of the company from a “personal computer” manufacturer to a “personal cloud solution” provider that integrates hardware, software and cloud computing together. The Company's direction is evident in a variety of new products, including the IdeaTab S2, Smartphone S2 and K91 smart TV.

“Lenovo is breaking down the barriers of device differentiation and weaving together hardware, software and cloud services that are connected, experiential and dynamic,” said Liu Jun, senior vice president and president, Mobile Internet and Digital Home business group. “We understand our users need more than just the traditional keyboard and screen for a truly satisfying digital experience. Our Personal Cloud vision integrates all devices, from tablets to TVs, for a comprehensive mobile Internet experience anytime, anywhere.

K91—the World’s First Smart TV to Run Android 4.0 OS

As the world’s first smart TV powered by QualComm’s 8060 Snapdragon dual core CPU, the K91 is also the world’s first smart TV running the Android 4.0 operating system - which will revolutionize technology in the living room. Its smart “Sandwich” UI unites three major smart TV functions, including Video On Demand (VOD), Internet applications and traditional TV programs. The online HD VOD is tailored to individual consumers’ viewing history, and delivers the best picture and audio quality with 3D FPR technology delivering flicker-free video on a full HD IPS panel at 240hz with SRS TruSurround. Internet applications include thousands of choices from the Android Market and Lenovo Store, including console games. Additional smart TV features include voice control with natural language processing and speech recognition technology, allowing viewers to use voice commands to control the remote. Video interaction is even possible with the built-in 5MP webcam, which integrates face recognition technology for security benefits and advanced parental control. With cloud support, consumers can access their favorite songs and videos with ease, share files between the TV and their tablet, smartphone or PC, and even control the TV via tablet and smartphone.

The IdeaTab S2 tablet, S2 smartphone and K91 smart TV are available immediately in China. Lenovo will be releasing these products worldwide at a later date. More information on these products is available at www.lenovo.com

CES 2012: Lenovo Unveils Android-Powered IdeaTab S2 10, S2 Smartphone, And "Personal Cloud"
androidpolice.com
Posted by Liam Spradlin in Android OS, Gingerbread 2.3, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, IdeaTab S2 10, K91 TV, Lenovo, News, S2

Lenovo, "the world's number two PC company," has just introduced a bevvy of new Android-powered devices, emphasizing their specs and compatibility with Lenovo's "Personal Cloud," which promises to make the company a "personal cloud solution." Liu Jun, Senior VP and President of Lenovo's Mobile Internet and Digital Home business group, explained the significance of the Personal Cloud:

Lenovo is breaking down the barriers of device differentiation and weaving together hardware, software, and cloud services that are connected, experiential, and dynamic. We understand our users need more than just the traditional keyboard and screen for a truly satisfying digital experience. Our Personal Cloud vision integrates all devices, from tablets to TVs, for a comprehensive mobile Internet experience anytime, anywhere.

Among Lenovo's newly-announced devices are the IdeaTab S2 10 and S2 Smartphone. The IdeaTab S2 10 looks to be an attractive (if not equally powerful) tablet, ringing in at a miniscule weight of 1.27 pounds. Here's a look at what's under the hood:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8960 Dual-Core Processor at 1.5GHzAndroid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (with Lenovo's Mondrian overlay)10.1" 1280x800 IPS Display1GB RAM16GB/32GB/64GB Internal StorageWi-Fi And 3G ConnectivityA variety of ports including micro USB, micro SD, Micro HDMI, SIM card, 3.5mm audio jack5MP Camera and 1.3MP Front shooterThe IdeaTab S2 10 will also be compatible with a Transformer-style keyboard dock, and promises a 20 hour battery life.

The S2 Smartphone emphasizes security, featuring "a unique, kernel-level security system to protect personal data, prevent phishing, and control network and SMS traffic." The phone will also be available in two forms: the 8GB version (which also has more RAM) or a souped-up 16GB model. Here's a look at the phone's full spec list:

Qualcomm MSM8255 dual-core processor at 1.4GHzAndroid 2.3 Gingerbread (with Lenovo Magic 3.0)3.8" 800x480 TFT display512MB RAM (for the 8GB version) or 1GB RAM (for the 16GB variant)WCDMA and HSPA+ Connectivity8MP Camera and .3MP Front shooterMicro USB, 3.5mm audio, HDMI and MHL Connectivity1500mAh batteryWhile slightly outdated in terms of software, the S2 Smartphone's hardware certainly sounds impressive, and the device's form factor isn't too bad either, boasting a "round arc design" and a combination of metal and plastic build components. Also of note is the phone's one-key sharing function, which allows for exceedingly easy sharing across a variety of social media platforms.

Of course both of these devices are compatible with Lenovo's Personal Cloud. While neither packs particularly revolutionary specs, they seem to be formidable entries into the mobile electronics world, and it will certainly be interesting to see Lenovo's take on cloud-based media storage, particularly as the manufacturer touts cloud compatibility with the K91, the world's first TV running Android 4.0. No pricing information has yet been released, but we'll be here to cover any additional details that roll out.

CES 2012: Acer Unveils Iconia A700 Tablet, Quad-Core Tegra 3 Processor, 1080p Display, Ice Cream Sandwich - Coming Q2 2012
androidpolice.com
Posted by David Ruddock in Acer, Iconia A700, Tablets

We arrived at CES earlier today, and Acer's pre-CES event was the first item on our agenda (yes, on a Sunday). The company unveiled a number of ultrabooks. a new cloud service, and brieflymentioned that it was bringing a brand-new Android tablet to market later this year - so briefly that we didn't even hear the name of the device mentioned (obviously, we later found out what it was called).

The Iconia A700 will be the company's second attempt at a flagship, 10.1-inch Android tablet. While we didn't grab any hands-on time with the new tab at Acer's press event earlier today, we watched the device demoed and it looks fairly impressive. Check out these snaps from The Verge:

So far, we know the following about the device:

1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor
10.1" 1920x1080 display
microSD slot
HDMI port
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
9.8mm thickness

As a follow-up to the A500, the A700 is definitely a major improvement. The display resolution allowed by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor is on the level of a mid-range desktop computer monitor. Pricing information wasn't given, but Acer is targeting Q2 2012 for release.
