One consequence of this primary campaign:

More Americans identified as independents in 2011, 40%, than in any year since Gallup began regularly measuring party identification. Democrats continue to outnumber Republicans by a slight margin, 31% to 27%, though the parties are tied when independents' leanings are taken into account. Read more at GALLUP.com.
