<Thank you very much for your service.

What did you mean by this? Very curious.
As an aside I want to add that I was a PacFleet sailor. Water conditions matter a lot. My friends who did Med cruises had VERRY different experiences.

A colleague served on a Polaris boat, but I know virtually nothing about his experience.>

Thank you for your thank you and thank you for your career. It sounds very rewarding and interesting.

Sorry for the acronyms, they role very easy. PacFleet is the Pacific fleet where I spent most of my time. The Med is the Mediterranean.

A search for sound propagation in water or ocean-acoustics will probably give an ocean (LOL) of information but this is kind of another fun walk down memory lane.

Sound propagation through water depends on temperature, pressure and to a much lesser extent salinity. The ocean acts as a lens or a mirror (layer depth) to sound. Our ability and the range that we could detect submarines both actively or passively is dependant on the water conditions. Water conditions in the Mediterranean are much more conducive to detecting a sub than in the Pacific.

In bull sessions, I was green with envy when I heard Mediterranean sonar stories.
