Getting marching orders from a creature in the sky is a pretty common belief, seems to be one of those universal human traits or tendencies.
Why would they be different?
And who knows what the guys running things believe.

True, that wouldn't be sane. But that form of insanity is common and hardly confined to Iran.

After all, many US politicians claim to get their marching orders from invisible spirits of one sort or another. Professed belief in such deities is, in fact, virtually a perquisite to getting elected. In this respect Iran and the US are very similar.
