Estate and gift taxes combined
2006 - $26.1 billion
2007- $26.0 billion
2008 - $25.7 billion
2009 - $26.3 billion

Also the estate tax is estimated (by Alicia H. Munnell, a former Federal Reserve economist who served on President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers) to cost about a dollar in compliance cost for every dollar in revenue. And you would have a smaller figure in enforcement costs (probably only a few pennies per dollar) and all the direct costs and indirect economic distortion created by the attempts to avoid it. Its one of the least efficient taxes the federal government has.
