revolt,

Shutting down the straights is nuts. The Iranians couldn't do it for long before having whatever Navy they float blown out of the water. It' silly to think they can take on the American fleet.

In my opinion, the fear should be the Iranians taking out an LNG or crude carrier.

Want to make a mess? Sink a few boats and see how many captains and insurance companies want to cover a boat going into the Persian Gulf.

Oh...and blame the sinking on the Americans.

RN6, re Hormuz, my concern is that in "diplomatic talk" the US has always held that free passage of mid-east oil was a "vital interest" which means we go to war over it. We have reiterated this posture in different language in the last few days. From Iran's point of view (or anybody else's for that matter) an embargo is an act of war. Iran's leadership is irrational from our point of view and we are incompetent sissies from Iran's point of view. A bad combination. The only positive outcome may be that if shooting starts, we go ahead and wipe out their nuke stuff as part of the conflict. I may be misinformed, but the strait is too deep for a few sunken tankers to block it, so closing it requires ongoing mining and submarines, which Iran has, though how well and for how long they can execute while being shot at remains to be seen. It is likely that a huge SPR release can keep things under control for a few weeks. Hopefully if shooting starts it will be over in a reasonable time. I wouldn't want to be on a tanker in the Gulf when it starts.

If Iran wants one-third of it Navy to disappear in a few days, then, they should go ahead with an attempt to close the Strait.
