"Presented with "I believe God used evolution to create people," 12% of respondents strongly agreed, 12% somewhat agreed, 8% somewhat disagreed, and 64% strongly disagreed; 4% were unsure. Respondents in the northeast were more likely to strongly agree (25%) than respondents in the west (13%), midwest (12%), and south (8%); Mainline Protestants were more likely to strongly agree (25%) than Evangelicals (8%)."

Nothing to do with the science! Just, "I believe, me too, not me, count me in, I guess--sure"!!

What? There is a rational dispute as to the age of the earth in terms of between under 10,000 and over 4 MILLION years? The Genesis tales are remotely reflective of anything other than quaint stories from pre-scientific desert wanderers??

Nah! I think I will believe in Horus instead! Or maybe Athena or Manitou! Whatever!

Presented with "I believe Adam and Eve were literal people," 74% of respondents strongly agreed, respondents with graduate degrees were most likely to strongly disagree (16%) than respondents whose highest degree was a bachelor's degree (2%).

It always just makes you pause to wonder that so many can accept something so irrational , doesn't it ?

When it comes to the 6000yr old Earth idea at least the figures drop off by 1/2 for thats a big frog to swallow even for an brainwashed~from~birth evangelical from South Carolina . Obviously what "belief" is based on varies not independent of the subject/object reasoning which in the case of Adam & Eve the appeal lay in simple anthropomorphism and we all come from a mother & father .

Again we have the most childlike primitive reasoning in operation that is observed in tribesman in the rainforests or outback that also held belief in the first "Mom & Dad" . This the easy way to think , easy to believe and never questioned or left out because its so easily believed . . In the case of the age of the earth it follows naturally that there would be less "young earthers" for even a primitive tribesman or child can get the drift that the world is very very old .

It could be suggested that "God" is a mental~tool construct much like Tom Hank's soccer ball companion "Wilson" in the movie Castaway . Or at least the film depicts in a simplistic way how he paints a face on the ball , gives it a name & suddenly he does not feel so alone . This is just one man alone on an island which would be your small tribal groupings , as the world of man enlarges to the cosmopolitan state it reaches 2000yrs ago with expanded trading not just of goods but custom & thought over large regions , the idea of "Wilson" also enlarges to include that ideal of One Soccer Dad over all .

Wilson is as good a name as any other , but word " God" was around alot earlier with its roots in the Aryan Sandskrit ..if i have the story right .

Of course the ever popular tee-shirt "Shit Happens" could also have "We're All Africans" embossed on the back and be just as true...somehow don't think that would go over as well with alot of the anglo "believers" .

Here you have again "selective cognizance" at work which clearly demonstrates the willy~nilliness of belief itself . Though thru time & recent racial integration with Dr Martin Luther King's birthday tomorrow the idea of maybe a little less cauccasian Jesus is now allowed to be imagined . Or for those that have full control of their belief can remain in that "explain away" symbolic~fantasy mode they usually entirely inhabit and keep thinking Jesus who was definitely not of light colored skin , is white like me !
