And herein lies the rub. Notice how this is lastly but none the same it crept in. This is something (dole for unwed mothers) that has been happening for the last 50 years. But I didn't hear people making much of a big deal then as it is now under an African-American President, particularly when statistics show that a significant number of such mothers are African American. Can I think out loud and ask "Is this opposition more racial than political? For if it is not then what basis is there for Mitch McConnell to oppose a newly elected President without much of a record of action and policy execution? On the day McConnell made that statement, the only established fact was that both belonged to different races with a history of not-so-good race relations. All these taunts that he is not born here, that he is more Kenyan than American (thank you Mr. Gingrich, think of what Romney is doing to you now) etc. etc. you know lets the cat out of the bag.I also would have not rebated Americans extra tax refunds. I also would have started preaching belt tightening. That is what Bush did. I presume that the Bush cheques mailed to households has slipped your memory. And his clear message which was something like: "Here is money. Go SPEND."I would have started proposing budget cuts earlier and preparing the American People for more to come. I would have offered tax incentives earlier for employers who hired someone who was unemployed for over 26 weeks. I would have proposed universal service of two years and a draft for all young people between ages 18-26 with alternative service offered in public do good organizations saying it is morally wrong, in a democracy, to hire people to defend us. I view what Obama did is what we do when a person is brought into a trauma center. Stop the bleeding first and then provide ICU services. But I also recognize that people tend to lose their thought clarity when they allow politics to interfere with their thinking.I would not have put the credibility of the Office of the President on line by personally going down and negotiating with the opposition on TV. Instead I would have sent my negotiators in first to see if a deal could be worked out. I like "management by walking" style. someone who is hands on and does not sit on his ass to project an air of importance of the office or the person. This is man who walked the inner city in person and did not sit in the office saying that he is a Harvard grad. Many have forgotten that as a Senator, he spent 2 days in a lonely 85 year lady's apartment in Oakland CA (my backyard), caring for her, feeding her, doing her laundry himself, something that the In Home Care people were normally doing for her. When asked why he was doing so, he said that he wanted to get a feel for what is like to lead such as life of a abandoned 80 plus year old living on Govt. dole. So Bread Upon the Water, your handle may sound religious, but sanctity of life and respecting it goes much beyond having those words on the lips. To understand folks like Obama (and as an American I am still proud that there are people like that), you have to go much beyond any religious or political rhetoric. political, be it Democrat or Republican, left or the right. As a Democrat, I will abandon a Democrat like Obama, only when he stops caring for people. I am a Democrat by choice, an American by choice only because "We care for others AND share with others".
