I think the religious impulse of human kind is a natural one and, apparently, originally used to give people "rules" to establish order in the chaos and link man to the natural cycles and seasons. Since so many of us are divorced from our "mother" earth and don't live anymore by the planet's rhythms the impulse has gotten muted--and co-opted by those who have their own agendas to run.

I do think one of our present day dilemmas is how to channel this religious impulse of our nature into constructive work that benefits our planet--the source of our being. Hence, manifestations of the impulse, like the back to the earth movement and the organic and natural themes, appearing in commerce (again sometimes being co-opted).
