grf fan,

I, too, have been drawing parallels between of IBM in the 1970's and Cisco in 1990's; mainly to explain the high P/E valuation of Cisco
vis-a-vis Coms. I believe fund managers/analysts have been blinded by the high margins of Csco to the point of ignoring what the history of the high technology markets can teach them; namely, proprietary advantage is short lived, and technologies trend toward commoditization.
For my money, Coms(+USRX) is in a better strategic position than Csco--long term-- to benefit from market forces precisley because it is experienced as a commodity producer(networking)and has a big head start in the installed base of networking products at the retail(commodity) level. And as the browser wars have shown us, installed base is the name of the game.
