I think his message is that people have to get out and work, beginning at a young age.

Boys did it with newspaper routes, lawn-mowing, caddying, car washing.

Girls did it by babysitting ,etc.

The point is to earn some money to spend as you like or save as you like.

Nothing wrong with a work ethic.
