They seem to be useful, but do I really want
to be connected when I'm trying to get away from it all? :0)

you are in control of when it is turned on...

Last year a buddy of mine stayed on top of the mountain enjoying the view & solitude at the end of the day, after the lifts shut down.

He's an expert skier, but managed to catch an edge and get tossed into a tree. He dropped headfirst into a tree well, with a broken pelvis. He had his cell phone in a shoulder pocket, he was able to reach it, and luckily had the ski patrol's # programmed in. So lucky, in so many ways. But, without the phone, he was a dead man.

I used to think like that.. Mannie's right on the control and I find it helps you 'stay' away from it all. I think the folks that end up working too hard as a result are ones that are so inclined irrespective.. IOW they don't stop to smell the roses anyway.. or don't appreciate them when they do... :O)

I have never owned a cell phone either ..... despite the

pressure from all and sundry ......... but regarding getting away from it all ........ has it occurred to you that this process needs no effort at all?

As you grow older, the probability that you will be pushed away from it all is a smooth, continuous, monotonically increasing function of time. Therefore, an expenditure of effort is both unnecessary and serves to put you further out on the function than you need to be.

Worry is futile. We'll never get out of this alive.

:)

in my experience a single good trade at an opportune moment from some fixed-line telecom-challenged environ is worth a lot of peace of multitude of minds

so, yes, a cell phone is a must, and if one is on blackberry, ought to be backstopped w/ an iphone, and if on an iphone, backed up by a blackberry

would guess that above precaution has more than paid for several generations of cell phone service

otoh, if a fixed phone is always near at hand, then perhaps a simple wireless handset / fixed line base station would do
