Company Press Release

Tera Computer Company Runs Multiprocessor Program

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 21, 1997--Tera Computer Company (NASDAQ:TERA - news), a Seattle-based supercomputer company, announced today that it has run its first program on a multiprocessor Multithreaded Architecture (MTA) system.

Tera's unique MTA system is scalable, which means that it provides increases in application performance proportional to the number of processors with no change in the programming model. The MTA computer is also general purpose, so it can be used to solve a wide variety of computational problems. No other high-performance computer has been shown to be both scalable and general-purpose.

''Running a multiprocessor system is the key to scalability and represents another major milestone in the development of our MTA system,'' said Brian Koblenz, Tera's vice president of software. ''Multithreaded Architecture allows memory to be shared without sacrificing speed or performance. Thus, as we add more processors, we can solve problems faster,'' he said.

Tera plans to ship its multiprocessor MTA system to the San Diego Supercomputer Center this year. The order results from the National Science Foundation's award of $4.2 million to UC San Diego to fund the acquisition and evaluation of the Tera MTA system. UC San Diego has also received a $1.9 million, 18-month award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to implement, optimize and evaluate defense-related applications on the Tera MTA.

Tera Computer Company designs, builds and sells high-performance general-purpose parallel computer systems. For more information about Tera and its MTA systems, contact the company at 2815 Eastlake Avenue E., Seattle, Wash. 98102. Phone: 206/325-0800. Fax: 206/323-1318. E-mail: info@tera.com, or tera.com .

This press release contains forward-looking statements regarding, among other things, Tera's plans to deliver and install its MTA multiprocessor system to the San Diego Supercomputer Center. There are certain factors that could cause Tera's execution plans to differ materially from those anticipated by the statements made above. Among such factors are risks associated with integration of numerous modules into commercially configured systems, necessary modifications to hardware components, software and the integrated systems, timely availability of technology and components from third party suppliers and availability of adequate financial resources. For a discussion of such risks, and other risks that could affect Tera's future performance, please see ''Risk Factors'' in Tera's most recent SEC Form 10-KSB.
