Tigers Lose Martinez to Knee Injury and Mull Signing a Replacement

http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/18/tigers-lose-martinez-to-knee-injury-mull-signing-a-replacement/

The hopes of the Detroit Tigers took a big jolt when the team announced on Tuesday that valuable designated hittr Victor Martinez sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament and could be lost for the entire 2012 season. Martinez’s injury occurred last week, during an agility workout to prepare for spring training and the upcoming season. He is in the process of seeking other opinions on his treatment options, but the outcome is expected to be the same: reconstruction surgery and many months of rehab.

Martinez, a switch-hitter who hit .330 and rarely struck out for the Tigers last season, was expected to be a big part of the team’s core.

“I wouldn’t use the word ‘devastating,’” Tigers President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski said during a teleconference on Tuesday, according to the Detroit News. “More like a hit in the gut. You never like to get news like this. But you need to be resilient. You feel sorry for yourself for a day or so. Then you move on and look at the alternatives.”

Martinez struggled near the end of the 2011 season and during the playoffs with left knee issues. He had injured the knee while running the bases in August, and never fully recovered.

The Tigers and Martinez initially did not see this knee injury as a serious matter. He slipped during a drill, with all his body weight coming down on his left knee and he thought it was a strain. He went home, iced the knee and called Tigers trainer Kevin Rand. A magnetic resonance imaging test on Monday revealed the torn ligament.

Martinez spent some time last season catching for the Tigers but he was going to move full-time to designated hitter for 2012 to spare the wear and tear. He had a strong year at the plate last season, with 12 homers, 103 R.B.I., and helped set the table for slugger Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers now need to figure out their options — free-agent or otherwise — to replace Martinez’s offense in the heart of the lineup.

“We’re open to it, by all means,” Dombrowski said about bringing in a free agent, according to the Detroit Free Press. “Victor is a key guy in our lineup. We do have flexibility with positions that players play with us. We could maneuver from within. However, we’re open-minded to different alternatives to hitters who are available by free agency and trades. I’ve received numerous phone calls from agents… looking to place their players. But we need to digest the situation. Then we’ll go from there.”

Some Tigers fans are already bringing up the name of slugger Prince Fielder as a possible replacement for Martinez. Fielder spent much of his childhood in Detroit, as his father, Cecil Fielder, hit homers for the Tigers in the 1990s.

But the younger Fielder comes with a hefty price tag and wants to play first base. The Tigers have first filled by Cabrera, who is good in the field and strong at the plate. Fielder, according to FoxSports.com, is leaning toward signing with the Rangers.

Martinez, 33, is in the second season of a four-year, $50 million contract.
