Yes they are. So you don't like HTML5, XML, SQL, & Java (Pascal is essentially extinct) because they are controlled by standards groups and Sun/Oracle in the case of Java and some SQLs?

The great wide internet wouldn't work without the IETF maintaining the protocol standards. HTML certainly wouldn't work without W3C. XML is used to transfer all the data used to buy stuff on the web. SQL is used to store the data of the web.

Rubbish? No. Just tricky to use. But then running the Internet ain't easy either.
