Not all bad in Japan; I hope I don't have to justify how this relates to IOM. Ps. If I were truly buy and hold, I wouldn't spend so much time reading minute by minute developments anyway. I don't read the INTC thread much, and I own plenty (for me) Fred Thursday November 20 1:45 PM EST Matsushita Group Profit Jumps OSAKA, Japan (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.'s profits jumped in the first half of the fiscal year, although Asian economic turmoil has cast a shadow over the outlook for the Japanese electronics giant. Matsushita, which makes Panasonic, Technics and Quasar products, said Thursday its group pretax profit in the six months to September rose 34.3 percent from year-earlier levels to 57.2 billion yen ($450 million). The company said its group sales, or combined sales at Matsushita and its units in Japan and abroad, rose 8.2 percent to 3.90 trillion yen ($30.7 billion) in the interim period, the highest ever for a first-half period. For the full year, Matsushita said it expects its group pretax profit to grow 10.2 percent to 152 billion yen ($1.19 billion). "In the first half, we saw strong sales of audiovisual, information and telecommunications equipment in North America and Asia. This pushed up our overseas sales by about 18 percent from the previous year, thus helping to boost our earnings," said Motoi Matsuda, managing director at Matsushita Electric. Matsushita's group profit was also aided by its cost-cutting efforts and the yen's weakness, which helped to make its products more price-competitive abroad. The company's domestic sales edged down in the first half, reflecting the negative effects of a rise in the nation's sales tax in April and sluggish sales of seasonal products due to bad weather, the company said.
