Voyager will leave our solar system in a few years but overall there seems little incentive to spend a lot of money on space travel. Surely, even without major terrestrial setbacks (such as massive war or political change or loss of technology), it will still be many years before resource depletion or some other motive lights a fire under our ass. The superstructure to exist in outer space and conduct (say) mining is likely many decades away. And after that...

Of course, humanity always thinks it knows what is what: the earth is flat the earth is a sphere, and so forth. Our ignorance now displays at a much more subtle level--but it is still ignorance, so who knows!?
