<What do you think kept the massive Soviet Navy in their place for 40 years? The ideology of libertarianism, or the weapons on American war ships?> To the extent that it was practised, Libertarianism. You seem to be confusing pacifists with Libertarians. For some reason you think that Libertarianism would exclude means of self-defence.

As Ron Paul explained to an interviewer who had trouble understanding that cutting military expense does not necessarily mean cutting self-defence, $1 billion for an embassy in the midst of the Iraqi civil war is not really a lot to do with self-defence. The same amount spent on the border with Mexico would be more in tune with the idea of self-defence.

Also, you seem to think that Ron Paul's ideology is some obscure "chalkboard" philosophy. As he explains, the USA constitution was based on his ideology. Maybe you think the original chalkboard thinking of the founding constitution was not much good and the modern socialist big government thinking is better and less experimental.

If fact, Big Government as now practised is the experiment. Never in history has government been so in charge of so much of the USA's spending. It's an interesting chalkboard socialist theory you are pushing, but the results are in and bankruptcy is pending.

Now that you have hindsight, do you really think the war with Iraq was such a good idea? You don't think the $trillion and lives could have been better spent? That's an example of sensible spending gone awry. That much money spent on the border with Mexico and on repatriating the Mexican invaders would have achieved a lot more by way of self-defence. A Great Wall of USA could have been built coast to coast for that much money and imagine the economic boom for the region [if you think such spending is an economic boom].
