RJA, your thinking is similar to mine, if you are not a trader of sorts, and in retro-respect justifies to invest in indexes of stocks more than investing in stocks that are priced on anticipated own business growth which IMHO is pure gambling in the hope that the consumers will still buy the company products no matter what substitute will come to market or if the company will have the talent in the future to overcome their competition and rightly so read the physiology of the manses. (Apple is a clasic today)

Rolling the dice as most money managers do is not investing, it is trading which in actuality is speculation, and I think it is almost impossible to read the future.

Most WS seers get it right once, make sure of proper PR to establish their name and then relay on inside information or collusion with other of their kind to outperform the market. If one theme does not work they search for another theme to promote and sell to the retail investors if directly or via mutual funds.

I remember quite vividly how the pharma theme was promoted 15 to 20 years ago, a prospect of long term investment due to the aging of the baby-boomers. Well the DOT COM took over and then crashed and it seems most investor just forgot the "pharma and baby–boomer" business miracle.

Nothing is better proven than a company with steady business and substantial dividend payout. In this respect I bought small amount of Gazprom stock in hope that new finds of NG will not totally wipe out Gazprom business model.
