Intel EtherExpress PRO/100+ PCI Adapter

3Com Fast EtherLink XL PCI Network Interface Card

When it comes to Fast Ethernet adapters, you've got two camps--innovators and adopters. Since the last time we dissected this market, both groups have made massive strides in terms of affordability and features. This made picking an Editor's Choice quite tough. After much deliberation, the Intel EtherExpress PRO/100+ PCI Adapter and the 3Com Fast EtherLink XL PCI Network Interface Card came out on top, with an honorable mention for the SMC EtherPower II 10/100.

The adapters from Intel and 3Com have solid management software, full driver suites, lifetime warranties, and unlimited free technical support.

Intel and 3Com develop their own chip sets. This allows the vendors to provide additional features, such as Intel's adapter fault tolerance (AFT) and 3Com's Smart Agents. The adapters also offer performance enhancements, especially when used with the companies' respective families of server adapters, hubs, and switches. And finally, both vendors will let you trade in your 10-Mbps adapters for 10/100-Mbps upgrades until the end of the year.

Our honorable mention goes to the SMC EtherPower II 10/100, representing the low end of the market. At only $50 street, the EtherPower II includes management software and a full set of drivers.
