We need all that to get one article in Nature or Lancet or a student to get his thesis approved but it does not mean that a person by not being trained to use principles that suggest rigor does not understand the issue.

We do need a meteorologist to understand to which direction the wind is blowing.

That was a good breakdown of what I was trying to say...

neither you nor your dad would have the time or the patience. yes one limiting factor.. The one II mentioned... Yes first principles for the idea being expressed is not only what I meant...

When I would help folks out with basic calculus or differential equations... I would routinely be revisiting early high school knowledge and worse... so I am also talking about basic tools which serve many things...

more simply put maybe with out higher level assumptions of the target's knowledge level ...
