>>In my book, that definitely indicates an implosion of iPhone sales by Verizon.<<

According to the definitions popular among some around here, that's correct.

Not only that, but many of the Verizon iPhone sales were upgrades of existing customers (no doubt from BB and Android)

For the carriers who sell the iPhone, the question is more complex, as the results from Verizon Communications VZ -1.90% demonstrated on Tuesday morning. The telecommunications giant reported adding 1.2 million of the most lucrative post-paid wireless subscribers in the fourth quarter. It also activated about 4.3 million iPhones for the periodindicating that the majority of customers the device attracts are not new to Verizon, but rather upgrades of existing customers.

Another way to look at these numbers is that the number of non-iPhone smartphones sold at Verizon stayed relatively flat QoQ. Seems like that will be roughly true in the broader market (flat sales for Android and other platforms). Meanwhile, iPhone sales will nearly double.

Hard to tell how much iPhone actually stole sales from Android, but it's safe to assume that one would have expected some growth in the holiday quarter, especially with 3 successive iPhone killers launching (Bionic, Razr, Galaxy Nexus).
