Barney Frank, secret master of the universe. An idea that must never die. Newt is pumping it too, it must be true, just like Romney's a liar for calling Newt a lobbyist. And Newt's a Washington outsider, too. The reality based community remains amused, although this particular member is frightened enough of the possibility of President Newt that he's reconsidering his standing endorsement of the craziest Republican with a chance at the nomination.

Steve - Barney and company played the race card to deflect change of Fannie and Freddie. The race card played by people who care not what they say is very powerful.

Steve you forget that the Democrats were blocking the senate with filibusters at the time. As I recall there was a bill to stop this and the Democrats filibustered it or some committee shelved it.

Actually Frank was chairman of whatever committee oversaw Fannie Mae, which means dems controlled at least the House, when Bush advanced his plan to rein in Fannie Mae. It was opposed by all the dems on the committee and died there.

Of course the policies of the Fed, (Bush Appointmentl at the time) and the Dept of Housing also contributed to the problem and any fair minded person would spread the blame among both parties.

I am not at all certain that Bush's suggested reformations would have avoided the devastation of the economy as everything was in place for that to occur anyway and the biggest culprit in my view was the serial bubbles caused by the Greenspan bailouts, which both parties strongly supported.
