"we have ... a little 5" TV that runs on batteries." The US TV broadcast stations are now 'digital' and no longer work with older analog TVs. I presume you have checked to be sure your 5" TV is functional? New transmission frequencies mean totally different transmitter coverage (as well as signal modulation). Try it out where you think it will be needed. I don't know about other countries but I would guess none of them use the US digital system so the new US digital TV's probably don't work anywhere else.
